Choosing laminate floor textures.

Today Laminate flooring is by far one of the fastest growing flooring trends worldwide. Similarly, its sales are picking up pace in Pakistan as well. It might come as a pleasant surprise to most of the Laminate flooring consumers that homes and offices with Laminate flooring installed in them are now being priced higher on the Real Estate market, meaning that by installing a Laminate floor, you will not only uplift the Aesthetic feel of your space but add monetary value to your asset.

Laminate flooring in our market is often referred to as ‘wooden flooring’ because all of the available patterns around us resemble wood. A good laminate floor can be judged by its decorative surface. The looks should not be mechanical. Laminate flooring does not have the same rich texture as hardwood floors however texture is added to the surface for the closest resemblance possible.

Having a wood or laminate floor in your space should add to your comfort. Heavy textures can easily ruin the feel under your feet. There are three types of surfaces available:

Gloss/Smooth Finish: Also referred to as all-purpose surfaces. This type of a surface finish feels smooth under the feet proving to be a great surface to walk on barefooted or to relax on while reading a book. Dark colours with this surface should be avoided, as it tends to reveal footprints etc under sunlight. Unless you are willing to keep a damp mop handy, go for lighter tones with a smooth surface.

Engraved: Probably the most original wood surface. This surface has a thicker wear layer than that of a Gloss finish which makes the surface resistant to heavy foot traffic. It is comfortable to walk on. The texture provides a great visual effect under sunlight.

Embossed: One should be very careful when going for an embossed texture of laminate floors. Most of such textures look good at first sight when you hold the plank in your hand but once subjected to floor use, the texture itself can irritate your feet. Some cheap flooring brands offer heavy embossed textures. This texture is in-fact a cluster of horizontally stretched embossed lines that not only leave stress marks under your feet but have also been tearing up numerous pair of socks worldwide. Only a few European flooring manufacturers offer embossed textures that are designed to provide comfort not vice versa.

I, for one, have always told my clients to consider their Laminate floor as an investment and an investment is sound when made right
