Garden lighting: enhancing the look and security of your home

You can greatly improve the resale value as well as safety aspect of your home with the help of proper garden lighting.

Today, garden lighting is a popular choice with most homeowners as it represents a fun way to beautify and decorate the exterior portion of the house. In addition, specific areas of the garden can be highlighted to ensure added effect.

Solar lighting
With all the rage about environment protection, the world is increasingly moving towards using alternative fuel sources. One of the most popular forms of garden lighting remains solar lighting. This harnesses natural sunlight in order to provide effective lighting for various parts of the garden. However, one significant drawback of this lighting form is that if the sunlight is inadequate then the quality of lighting will also suffer.

How does solar lighting work?
The solar garden lighting is comprised of an outer plastic casing which has an inner solar cell. The solar lighting system also encompasses cadmium as well as a nickel battery along with an LED lighting device, control board as well as photo resistor. The natural sunlight charges the battery which in turn will lend power to the solar cell inside. The LED light as well as control board is charged with the help of this solar cell. During night time, in the absence of sunlight it is the photo resistor which will switch the LED back on. You can expect the LED source to run for 15 hours at a stretch if the battery has been charged.

Common shapes
Depending on your personal preferences and tastes, you can select the shape of your garden lighting. For example, the dome lighting made of plastic is one of the most popular choices. Usually used along borders and pathways, these garden lighting devices also come with spikes to facilitate easy adherence to the ground. Other common shapes are discs, tiki torches, lanterns, tubes, globes and plenty more. You can either stick them on the ground or choose to hang or mount them depending on your choice.

Highlighting specific regions
Most homeowners prefer to light up specific areas of their garden. For example, they may choose to light up certain trees or shrubs or illuminate the best looking bedding in the garden. They also tend to rotate their garden lighting depending on the season in order to highlight the flowers of the season. During the night, however, steps and pathways are illuminated in order to ensure added safety and protection.

Longevity of solar lights
Usually solar garden lighting will automatically switch on as soon as dusk approaches. However, if a homeowner wishes that the light stays on through the entire night then a motion detecting light is suitable. This is because most of the time, animals and creatures like squirrels, cats etc. will move around the place and having a lighting system that detects motion will keep them at bay. In addition, whilst solar lighting does tend to last long enough, many fail to live up to their promise. This is why, it is essential to crosscheck with your local manufacturer and read the description properly before buying such garden lighting. You could even ask friends and relatives who have used solar garden lighting earlier and find out about their experiences.
