How to Choose the Right

How to Choose the Right “Faux” Grass

The world of mock grass has come a long way since it first showed up in the 1960s. In its infancy, consumers had only one type of faux lawn to choose from – the super-fake-looking, low-cut, tough-as-nails stuff used to cover football fields and Putt-Putt golf courses.

Today, faux grasses rival their natural turf cousins in the variety of breeds available, their look and feel, and their appeal. Deciding which one is right for your needs is usually a matter of answering a few simple questions, say industry experts.

“When I have a customer considering imitation grass, and they’re unsure what they want or need, there’s a pretty short list of things they need to consider,” said Chris Harlien, operations manager for STC (Synthetic Turf Company), in Scottsdale, Ariz. STC sells and installs the NewGrass™ brand of artificial grass.

“We try to fit the best price and product for each customer’s needs,” he said.

1. Do You Have Young Children?
This is the first question Harlien and other sales people ask new customers. If you have children, especially youngsters who are going to romp and play on your faux lawn, the preferred choice is a grass with a two-fiber blade, such as NewGrass™ Rye.

The rye grasses sold by NewGrass and some others have a denser, two-fiber composition that provides more cushioning underfoot and more protection against a fall compared with brands and varieties that have a single-fiber, monofilament structure.

“Rye simply has more absorption qualities,” Harlien said.

2. Do You Have Dogs?
If you have dogs – or even one canine friend – you have two questions to answer. First, is your dog going to play or answer Mother Nature’s call on your simulated-natural grass? If so, your next question is this: Where will the lawn go and who will see it?

Will the faux lawn that your dog will use be installed in a highly visible or “people” area, such as your front or in a backyard where you and your family spend a lot of time? Or will the imitation grass the dog will use be installed in a less visible area, such as a side lot, or in area dedicated to your pet, such as a pet run?

If your dog will share the space with you and your family, or it’s in your highly visible front yard, you will probably want to choose rye or fescue artificial grass. These varieties are simply nicer looking than Bermuda, their generally less expensive cousin.

If the simulated grass your pet will play on and soil is in a pet run or less noticeable side yard, the experts suggest Bermuda.

“It costs less, it’s just a good for the dog, and it still looks real nice,” Harlien said.

3. Is the Lawn for a High-Traffic Area?
If your lawn is in a high-use area, either for weekend leisure or routine use, you’ll probably want to go with a rye variety of faux grass, or at least another duo-filament variety. The duo-filament composition of NewGrass Rye™ , for example, is a blend of 50% polyethylene and 50% nylon that is broadloom-tufted.

4. Are You on a Tight Budget?
Maybe you’ve decided you want a faux lawn, but you want to minimize its cost.
One great option is to go with a synthetic grass that’s in the middle of the price range and looks great, such as fescue, but add rubber to the infill. This will lower the overall price compared with getting a rye variety of artificial grass.

“And it will look just as nice,” Harlien said.
