Liquid Spills on your Laminate Floor?

Usually the first question on a consumer’s mind, while comparing the flooring materials with laminate floors, is "what happens if there is a liquid spill on the laminate floor? Will it spoil the floor?"

Considering the lifestyle of average families in this part of the world (South Asia), the above question is a valid concern. Liquid spills such as water, tea, coffee and wine etc. spoil the surface of any floor if not cleaned according to the prescribed maintenance instructions. Let a coffee spill sit on your marble floor for over an hour, and you will end up with a stain that would require extensive rubbing and chemicals to get rid of. Similarly, letting a water spill rest on a hardwood floor can cause catastrophic results.

As my readers are well aware of the expanding tendency of laminate floors upon absorbing moisture, if water is allowed to rest on its surface it will seep through the joints and get under your laminate floor. This will not only cause the joints to swell (usually 10% of the total thickness of the floor) but also will cause the floor to expand more than usual. As a result of this extra moisture the expansion gap (8-10mm) does not prove to be sufficient. Once the floor is jammed against the walls, the expansion affects ALL the joints and results in wrapping or buckling. This is indeed a heartbreaking sight to look at.

The good news is that if the damage is caught in its early stage, there is a light of hope. All it needs is that the skirting must be removed and the expanded floor under the skirting be sawed off or cut. Surface under the floor where the spill occurred must be checked and dried off. The joints that absorbed water shall retain their original form once the moisture dries out (depending on the quality of the floorboard). If the swelling has reached a point of no return, replacing the damaged planks is the only option.

To avoid such a thing, it is strongly suggested to clean-up spills immediately with a sponge or any dry absorbent cloth. For sticky spills such a tea, coffee or ice tea, spot cleaning is a must. Thanks to the laminated surface, you won’t have to worry about the stain.
