The Process of Measuring Fascia Properly

Many people struggle with measuring the fascia in a proper manner. If you wish to know the correct technique, then here is a primer to help.

The proper cutting and measurement of fascia is critical to ensure that they function as desired. No matter which board type you wish to buy, it is important that you know how to measure it properly.

Using the ladder
First, you need to place the ladder near the house areas where you wish to append a fascia. Take a measuring tape and start from one end of the wall. Keep continuing the measurement until you find a height change. If there are rain gutters present, you can take the length of these gutters into account whilst estimating the measurement of the board. The total length measurement will indicate how much quantity and length of board is required for the house.

The T-Bevel
Next, you need to use a special tool called the T-Bevel. This helps estimate angles of measurement on your fascia. Make sure to make this tool as tight as you can to get the most precise readings.

Adding the inches
Wherever a fascia piece has an angle to it, you need to add at least an inch or two in the measurement. Having an extra margin in inches will provide leeway whilst you cut the board to fit the angles and slopes.

Length of pieces
You should measure out each fascia piece once again before you commence cutting. Even if few pieces of board are longer than necessary, it is fine. However, take care that no pieces are too long; otherwise, it can prove difficulty in installation.

Practice makes perfect
Do not use the fascia pieces right away. Instead, practice on some scrap pieces of wood first. Measure out the pieces along with the angles needed and then cut the scrap wood. This will be used later as template for cutting the actual board.

Tools for cutting
Using the proper tools for cutting fascia is vital. Plywood blades are a good option if you want quick cuts. However, opt for small knives as guiding lines for vinyl or aluminium pieces of board.

Number of screws required
In order to estimate how many screws are required, you need to measure the entire length of all fascia pieces. Once you have taken measurement, simply convert it into inch format. Then proceed to divide this number by 6 or by 7. This result number should be multiplied by the number two. This final number is the number of screws you will require for mounting the board pieces.

Width of pieces
Most fascia pieces have widths measuring from 1 or 2 inches. If you intend to replace a portion of an existing board, you need to take a small portion of the old fascia along. This way, the thickness of the new board will be the same as the old one and the fit will be proper.

Different fascias
There are various fascia board varieties available these days such as wood, vinyl, aluminium and other varieties. But no matter which variety of board you intend to buy, the measurement process remains similar. We hope these steps helped you in taking proper measurements of your board.
