Random Stone Steps
Random laid stone steps without any borders. When landscaping is done on hillsides and slopes, a good ground cover plant or plants will often eliminate the need for retaining walls, borders, and edging. Generally, when landscaping slopes and hillsides, these elements are needed to keep the hill and soil in place.
In this picture, the garden stairs are planted all the way up to the edge of the steps which not only keeps the soil and hillside in place, but also naturally covers and softens the edges of the stone steps.
