Screeding The Courtyard Floor
Screeding is smoothing and leveling the final base that we'll lay the pavers over. This patio floor was a bit tricky as we had to create a 2 inch drop to allow for drainage. Both the floor and retainer rows had to be calculated for this.
Since this courtyard patio is between two buildings on the same construction pad, the entire base floor we had to start with was contractor fill. This was both good and bad. It was a chore to get it to workable grade but is a very solid base for our pavers.

For our final grade screeding material, we used crusher fines or chat. It compacts tight and solid but has a little give in compaction that needs to be allowed for. Some contractors use pure sand, some use a mixture of both. Pure sand has the least compaction but may be difficult to use where there are a lot of voids.
