Landscaping In Arid Desert Climates
In response to dry, hot, arid climates, desert and southwest landscapes have a personality and characteristics that reflect the harshness of the region. While not all areas of the Southwest are considered desert regions, the image that comes to mind when mentioning one or the other is generally the same. And because of the limited natural resources (water) in the Southwest, it's only natural that much of Southwest landscaping has taken on the personality of the Southwest desert.
However, they're not the same. Even though methods may be the same, Southwest landscaping takes a lot of its personality from the cultural and architectural styles of the area. Desert landscapes, on the other hand, are often forced to look the way they do by an even harsher drier climate.
