Railroad Tie Garden Path
While you will see railroad ties being used in many different landscaping and garden design ideas, they should probably be left out of most of them. Very rarely should they be used as a primary visible element or hardscape but more often as a retainer or border as in the garden path in this picture.
As a visible element, railroad ties have a rustic appeal that only fits the theme of certain garden plans. They sometimes don't even work well in rustic landscaping applications because of their refined manufactured look. As an inexpensive border, retainer, or garden path step, they can still often find a place in many landscapes and gardens.
