Water in Japanese gardens is very important and is symbolic of the sea. In a Japanese garden such as this one where water takes up most of the space, the style of garden is called "Chisen". Another way of symbolizing water which is quite common is with raked bodies of sand or gravel. That style is called "karesansui" and may or may not have any water present at all.
